St John the Baptist, Kennerleigh Kennerleigh Church

A favourite for summer weddings, this one of Elaine and Simon Reed on Friday, August 27.

A significantly high proportion of Kennerleigh parishioners form the lively and friendly Church in this place, embracing members from a wide spectrum of church traditions. The people of the Church are renowned for their warm and friendly welcome, and their readiness to offer help and hospitality to all who come to the Parish, and beyond.

The Church is dedicated to St John the Baptist, whose festival is celebrated on Midsummer’s day each year.

The lovely Church building has been central to the Parish and its regular worship for nearly six centuries, growing from a small chapel of ease to one of modest size suitable for our needs as a community.

It is lovingly cared for and decorated, and the churchyard is regularly maintained by teams of volunteers, the rotas for whom are on the Notice Board in the Church Porch.

The Church is part of the North Creedy Team Ministry, and Rev Lindsey Starrs, who is based in Morchard Bishop, is our Vicar, keeping in regular touch with all that goes on here, and leading two of our weekly services each month. Lindsey may be contacted on 01363 877221

Two services each month are led by members of the Church congregation, and we have a reputation for singing lustily; and quite tunefully. We are blessed with three excellent organists, and a decent organ.

The monthly pattern of Church services is:Church Exterior
First Sunday: Evensong at 1830
Second Sunday: Service of the Word at 1115
Third Sunday: Prayer Book Holy Communion at 0830
Fourth Sunday: Eucharist at 1115
Fifth Sunday: Mini-team service at one of the seven Churches in our part of the Team.

Details of all services and any special arrangements are always posted on the Church Notice Board and advertised in Cross Country magazine.

The Churchwardens are:
Don King at Jancot; Tel 01363 866560 and
Adrian Miller at The Old Rectory: Tel
01363 866556
who will gladly give further information if needed.

NEW LOOK FOR OLD LAMP POST

New lamp for old

At first glance this is what remains of an ordinary, old fashioned lamp-post dating from way back in the last century or even the century before that. The post itself may be that old - but take a closer look at the top.

Davel ays new cable

The half circle is not part of the lamp, but electric cable that Kennerleigh parisioners have got up there, awaiting the attentions of local electrician Dave Simms 01363 772392 (left) who is doing the job for free,

One lamp near the church has been working for some years. This project was to extend the lit area beyond and to the left the lamp above the lych gate which has not worked for years.

Topping Out

Job Done!

Michael Roberts fits the ancient glass lamp frame and casing top to Michaels' Lamp above the lych gate at Kennerleigh's St John the Baptist Church on Friday, September 17.

Michaels' Lamp is so named after two Michaels: Michael Dennison who left the church a considerable legacy for church upkeep and Michael Roberts who organised and effected  the renovation of the old lamp which churchwarden, Adrian Miller, donated to the project.
